PACK NEWS
ARDSLEY PACK 3
November 24, 2009

Happy Thanksgiving, and welcome to the November 2009 Pack meeting! Sheri has arranged for the Sakura Taiko Japanese Drumming Team to perform at this meeting and hopefully have some of the boys try their hands at the drumming. But before we get to the drummers, we need to complete some Cub Scout “business.”

Welcome Guests
A special welcome to the first graders and their families responding to the flier sent home from school and to any first through fourth graders invited by their friends in the pack. Please be sure you sign in at the welcome table and pick up an Ardsley Pack 3 welcome packet. Sheri Marchi and/or I will be able to talk with you once the drummers start their program next door.

Tonight’s meeting
*  Uniform Inspection between 6:45 and 7:00 as you arrive (before the
     meeting.)
*  Opening flag ceremony promptly at 7:00.
*  A Bobcat Ceremony will be held to recognize and welcome the new          Cub Scouts (and their families) who have completed the requirements      for the Bobcat Badge.
*  Present Webelos Activity Badges.
*  Sakura Taiko Japanese Drumming Team performance.
*  T-shirts and sweatshirt problems addressed at the welcome table.
*  Sign up to help with food and decorations at the December Holiday         Party.
*  Sign up to help out with the Pinewood Derby.
*  Last chance to pay your dues and remain on the roster for this year’s
    re-charter.

As a reminder, please help at this meeting by: observing the Cub Scout sign (be quiet when the sign goes up, and raise your hand in the Scout sign, as well), turning off your cell phones, keeping young siblings occupied and quiet during the meeting, and keeping your own conversations quiet and to a minimum. Please keep an eye on your children and help manage their energy level.

T-Shirts & Sweat Shirts
If you ordered T-shirts or sweatshirts, please pick them up at the welcome table. If there is a problem with a T-shirt or sweatshirt, we have a few extras of various sizes you can look through for an exchange.

Uniform Inspection
We would like to see the Cub Scouts attend pack meetings in proper uniform. As an incentive, all Cubs who present themselves for and pass a uniform inspection will receive a “Uniform Award” patch that can be worn on a patch vest. Inspections will be conducted informally before each pack meeting begins for those who have not already earned the patch. When you arrive, proceed to the uniform inspection area and follow the insructions there.

Millwood Food Bank Service Project Thanks
“Thank You” to all who came to the Millwood Food Bank to help those less fortunate. With 19 adults and 20 youth from the pack participating, this was definitely the best turnout since we started helping at the food bank. A special thanks to the following Cubs who brought their parents, brothers and sisters to help out:

Aaron Becker
Jack Becker
Jacob Bobson
Octavio Burbano
Christopher Florkowski
Nathan Harris
Motoaki Kurihara
Kyle Lonergan
Maximus Marchi
Nicholas Marchi
Bennett Marino
Kyle Matsen
Christopher Pence
David Quinzin
Edouard Quinzin
Gavin Ryan
Ryan Sidi
Isaac Wynn

Popcorn Thanks!
A hearty thanks to those of you who sold Trail’s End popcorn, and a special thanks to our Popcorn Kernel, Sheri Marchi!  Our pack sold about $8,000 in popcorn, raising over $2,900 for the pack.

Pack Swim – White Plains YMCA – Tuesday, December 1st  and Tuesday, February 16th
The pack swim will be held at the White Plains YMCA (250 Mamaroneck Ave, White Plains) from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM.  For more information, or to reserve the pool for your den, contact Sheri Marchi.

Hudson River Planetareum – Friday, December 4  6:00 PM
You should arrive before 6:00 – it fills up quickly. The event is free, but a donation is requested. More to follow.

Parent & Leader Meeting Tuesday December 8th at 7:00 pm
at Sheri’s house
29 Kenneth Road, Hartsdale (corner of  Kenneth and Sherwood.)  Please RSVP to Sheri if you are coming.  Topics to be covered include the holiday party, Pinewood Derby, Blue & Gold event, community service events, and more!

December pack meeting Holiday Party – Tuesday, December 22.
*   Our holiday party takes the place of our monthly pack meeting, and
we have a fantastic evening planned!
*   Please bring an unwrapped gift (for a child aged birth – 18 years) to
donate to residents of the Mt. Vernon Division of the Rockland
Psychiatric Hospital, who would not otherwise be able to provide a
holiday gift to their child or grandchild.
*   Uniform Inspection before the meeting to qualify for the Uniform
    Award patch.
*   Bobcat Ceremony for those who completed the requirements but did
    not receive the badge yet.
*   Pick up your Pinewood Derby rules and car kits.
*   We still need help with the food and decorations. Please contact
Sheri Marchi if you can help.

Pinewood Derby plans
Art Bounos and Mark Florkowski will lead the crew again this year to another fantastic day at the track..

The general plans are:
*   Hand out Pinewood Derby rules and Car Kits at the December pack
    meeting.
*   Those who miss the December pack meeting can pick up the rules
    and kits afterwards.
*   Run a Pinewood Derby clinic/workshop on Saturday, January 16 to
get your cars cut out and started.
*   Make arrangements to help those who could not attend the workshop.
*   Register your cars on  Wednesday or Thursday, January 27th or 28th
    (really a fine-tuning workshop.)
*   Set up the Ardsley Middle School cafeteria and the track on Friday,
    January 29.
*   Run the Pinewood Derby on Saturday, January 30 from 1:00 to 4:00.
*   Last year’s rules are on our pack web site. This year’s will be very
    similar.
*   As last year, all participants must sign an agreement upon receipt of
    the rules and car kit.
*   All cars must be constructed from the materials provided by the pack,
so don’t go out and buy or start anything before you read this year’s
    rules.

The crew from last year is getting things started, but we will need more help. We need volunteers to help out at the workshop, registration, setup, race-day, and cleanup. Please sign up tonight or send an e-mail to Rich Okrasinski.
